From the Office of the Superintendent

Upcoming Special Board Meeting
On January 17, 2012 a new Election Law was signed by Governor Christie which permits school boards of education, by resolution, to move the April annual school board election to the date of the November general election as well as eliminate the public vote on the budget as long as it is at or below the tax levy cap.  The Board of Education Meeting will hold a special meeting on Monday, February 6th, 2012 to take formal action.  All Boards of Education need to have their resolutions in place by February 17, 2012 which necessitates this special meeting.

Forked River School Gives New Meaning to Family Engagement Family Chess

One might think that there is no difference between the words parent involvement and parent engagement but they are worlds apart.  On January 31, moms and dads at Forked River School were engaged in play.  They were challenged to rearrange work schedules, dinner or babysitting plans for younger siblings to come out to school and play chess with their child. When we engage our parents, we challenge them to do something that they feel is important to them.  Engaging parents is very challenging -  involving much easier. But truth be told, both are still very difficult for teachers and principals to achieve.   Last night, Mrs. Blatt in full queen costume, Mr. Fiedler (dressed like a principal), supportive colleagues from all of Laceys schools and even high school students came out to support Forked Rivers First Family Chess Night.  Family Chess Night was filled with strategy sprinkled with drama, debate, and discussion.
Parents who are engaged are connected in a whole new way. But what does it mean for kids?  Kids whose parents are engaged simply are more successful at the game of school.  They have better grades; they will strive for higher level course work when challenged; they have better attendance; they develop social skills at higher levels.  When parents are engaged kids get even more engaged.  That is checkmate the end game parents engaged in schools schools engaging parents kids having fun and everyone feels stronger to tackle the next move.  Thank you Mrs. Blatt and to all of her chessmen for a great night of family chess.
